Regardless the method for synchronization, clocks can be operated stand alone or in local networks.

The main advantage of stand alone clocks is that costs for wiring and installation can be reduced and even avoided , if the clocks are battery operated. Since stand alone clocks operate independently the function of a stand-alone clock is limited to just display time.

The accuracy of a stand alone clock is kept by an internal quartz crystal or by a combination of built-in quartz crystal and radio-synchronization. The antenna for synchronization signals can be either built-in or external. Power supply may be by battery or by mains.

Westerstrand radio signal synchronised stand-alone clocks are fully automatic with built in micro-controller and a long wave radio receiver. The radio receiver includes an ferrite antenna and is also equipped with an input for external antenna.

Analogue versions are available for battery operation or for mains 230V operation, and for in- or outdoor use. If a power failure stops the mains operated clock, the clock will automatically step forward to 12.00-position and wait for a correction signal to be received. A red LED flashing in seconds rhythm indicates received signal. Automatic feedback control of the hands at 12.00 and 00.00.
